It's Winter
January 3, 2013
The light is low. The air - cold and crispy blue. The ice - smooth as glass...inviting.
All of a sudden - everywhere I look - it's winter.
I do love this season. I love the long nights....the invigorating cold...the warmth of blankets and socks and hats and mittens. I love the blue skies..the dazzling light...the sparkle.
I love snow - so clean and pure and white.
But more than any of all of that - I love the memories of a childhood past. Of sledding..of skiing..of skating on lakes and ponds and rivers - frozen solid. Of hot chocolate and cider. Of bundling up and venturing out..and - then - returning in. To comfort. To safety. To where it was always home.
Everywhere I look - it's winter. And everything I see - reminds me of my youth...and of me.

Ah, very nice. I love complaining of winter, but deep down, I truly appreciate the full spectrum of seasons. Happy New Year Marcie!
So true Marcie and a lovely way to enjoy Winter.
Winter also brings me back to my childhood and so many good memories, however that's in my mind...my body just wouldn't play along today, just too cold! You are a better woman than I to have braved this frigid weather to get this wonderful image!
ah, the canadian in you....as always, your daily practice is my pleasure.
Marcie, great post. Love your photo. I loved reading about memories of a childhood past. It reminded me of a lot of things we did as kids such as skating on a frozen patch of ice and tobogganing. We would spend our days outdoors it seemed.
Childhood memories are the best, and your words captured them so well :-)
Did you go skating a little bit...I so hope you did xo
Beautifully captured- perfectly timed & the light is stunning. It's nice how childhood memories can be woven into a season, isn't it?
Oh yes. And being a Michigander at heart, I can totally relate!
It chills me to the bone just to look at these photos...and here I am bundled up on the couch because it is below 60 degrees outside ;)
I love this photo. Winter weather was much more enjoyable when I was a child.
Love your description of winter..makes me appreciate it more!
Where did you grow up as a child, Marcie? Must have been magical. I love winter too, and grew up in Colorado with parents who moved there when I was 2 years old. So they were totally amazed and enthralled and "into" the Rocky Mountains and sledding and skiing and it all rubbed off on we fortunate kids of theirs. (they came from Minnesota - cold, bitter cold, but not much in the way of mountains). What a fun picture!
The very definition of "the decisive moment" - capturing the flying puck and the snow spray from speedy skates. The sparkle from newly fallen snow - it doesn't get any better than that, does it? And yes, the returning home, into that warmth - heavenly!
I love your reminiscence of youthful playing!
Well, no snow here in grey, grey, Ireland. But in between the greyness there are delightful sunny days, when even though the sun rarely gets far beyond the horizon, it's light is quite delicious.
Anyway, weather not withstanding, a wonderfully atmospheric shot of the skaters...
Perfect timing and beautifully captured. Nice winter atmosphere
This brings back so many memories of my brothers and i playing hockey on our northern lakes Marcie... i also love all of the other things that you said about winter... it gets a lot colder here in the north... but i wouldn't change it for anything....peter:)
Winter at its best! Love your words and the fascinating, storytelling photograph.
winter sure is fun for these kids, very nice shot.
Great minds think alike. I had a similar thought the other day. I was looking through my photos to post and I realized so many were still from fall. my photos didn't represent what was outside...winter. Guess I need to head outside with my camera. (My two kids played hockey for years...this picture brought back many memories...thanks!)
Love this one. The action, the light.... It is all there!
Marcie your words always touch me to the core!
Some of my fondest memories are of making snowmen as kids. Coming in frozen to the bone and being warmed up with a nice hot drink.
love how the dark patch makes up the composition
This is a great action photo. The light causes my eye to straight to the skaters, who are in playful combat. Then I follow the hockey stick to the flying puck, and on to the frozen pond.
I do have a question: why aren't you out there skating and sledding? Certainly you are not too old?!!! :-)
Very nice action shot! You can almost feel the cold air rushing by when looking at this image! I has a lot of energy and playfulness!
Very well captured in that burst of sun. I can even see the puck flying
I'm so jealous that you get to take in scenes like this in the winter--we Canadians need stuff like this to sustain us!
