World famous for its 177 canals, Venezia is built on an archipelago of 118 islands in a shallow lagoon. In the oldest part of the city, the canals serve as roads, and every form of transport is on water or on foot. Approximately 400 bridges connect and tie the islands together. As Europe's largest urban car free area, it remains unique as a sizable functioning city in the 21st century entirely without any sort of motor vehicles. |
