| These are about my recent adventures in Italy. I will be posting images and occasional accompanying descriptions of what it is you are looking at.
Hope you enjoy the journey.
Closely spaced wood piles driven deep into the subsoil, formed the base for the built environments of ancient Venezia. In the mineral rich water and with the absence of oxygen, these wooden foundations petrified and acted like solid rock. The buildings atop of these footings were often built on a framework of wood and brick, with a veneer of heavier stone. For hundreds of years these buildings stood. In the early 20th century when artesian wells were sunk into the periphery of the lagoon, the city began to slowly sink. Preservation and restoration has become a big concern and ongoing project. |
