These are about my recent adventures in Italy. I will be posting images and occasional accompanying descriptions of what it is you are looking at.

Hope you enjoy the journey.

Anchoring one end of the Piazza San Marco, sits the most famous and perhaps most opulent of the Venetian churches. Home to the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice, it symbolizes the city’s religious wealth and power. Although the basic structure of the basilica was built in 1063, it’s decoration and adornment was ongoing, and not completed until the 14th century. Due to its rich and rather exuberant design, and its gilded mosaics, it is known as the ‘Chiesa d’Oro’ or ‘Church of Gold’.

St. Mark’s symbol, the winged lion, sits beneath him as he watches over the city. The book he is carrying says: ‘Pax Tibi Marce Evangelista Meus’ or ‘Peace to you Mark my evangelist’.
